Rusty Lake: Roots

Rusty Lake: Roots is the 2016 premium entry that lays out the Vanderboom family history, and the game that Servant of the Lake is set decades before.

Last updated 2026-08-26

The second premium release, and the entry that spends its whole length on the Vanderboom family history — the thread the Cube Escape games keep gesturing at.

Where it sits in the series

Roots matters more than its position suggests for anyone arriving from Servant of the Lake. Servant is set before Roots, in spring 1839, which makes Roots the game its ending points forward to. Roots, Rusty Lake Hotel and Rusty Lake Paradise are the three entries that dig into family history rather than the lake's present.

Play order

In release order this is number 12 of nineteen. It follows Rusty Lake Hotel and is followed by Rusty Lake Paradise.

The two lines interleave by year, so a flat release list is not the same as reading the Cube Escape games first. The sorted version is on Rusty Lake games in order.
